The Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis held a special fellowship on Sunday, 13 September 2026, at EMJMM Hotel, bringing members and guests together for an evening of learning, recognition and fellowship.
With September recognised by Rotary as Basic Education and Literacy Month, the gathering provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of education and its role in opening opportunities for children and young people.
The fellowship welcomed several distinguished guests, including Dr. Enieti Udofia, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism; Elder Ubong Essien Umoh, Commissioner for Education; Elder Ubong John Inyang, Commissioner for Lands; Ambassador Sunday Usikhifo, Club Awardee; and Mr. Precious Effiong, a Branch Manager at TAJ Bank.
Education at the Centre of the Conversation
A key part of the evening was a lecture delivered by Elder Ubong Essien Umoh, Commissioner for Education, who spoke about the value of quality education and the need to ensure that every child has access to it.
He described education as an important equaliser in society and encouraged members to consider how they can contribute to better educational opportunities for children.
The presentation led to questions and discussions among members, making education not just a theme for the month but a practical subject of conversation.

Preparing Young Minds Through the Spelling Bee
The club also shared updates on its upcoming Spelling Bee Competition, which will bring together 10 schools as part of its efforts to promote literacy and encourage young people to develop their reading and language skills.
The competition forms part of the club’s activities for Basic Education and Literacy Month and reflects its wider commitment to supporting young people through education.
Recognising Service

The evening also provided an opportunity to recognise someone whose work has made a difference in the lives of others.
Ambassador Sunday Usikhifo was presented with the Humanitarian Service Award in recognition of his commitment to humanitarian service.
The recognition highlighted the importance of celebrating people who continue to give their time and resources in service to others.
Welcoming a New Rotarian
The fellowship also marked the addition of a new member to the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis.
Miss Theresa Nde, a medical doctor, was formally inducted into the club, joining its growing family of members committed to fellowship and service.
Her induction adds another professional perspective and strengthens the club’s capacity to bring different skills and experiences together in service of the community.
From discussing education and literacy to recognising humanitarian service and welcoming a new member, the September fellowship reflected the different ways Rotary brings people together.
For the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis, it was another opportunity to learn, connect and serve, while continuing to Create Lasting Impact.
Service Above Self.
